The European startup Tandem Health intends to change that. By using their AI medical assistant, healthcare professionals can free up time for providing care instead of note-taking and documentation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"intro\">\u201cOur goal is less stress and better, more equitable healthcare,\u201d says Oliver \u00c5strand, CTO of Tandem Health.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tandem Health \u2013 Reinventing clinical workflows with AI\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/vw30gz56CYg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:%2F%2Fpulse.microsoft.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Oliver \u00c5strand is an AI researcher that recognized early in the evolution of AI that large language models could enable innovative business solutions. \u00c5strand founded Tandem Health with his partners, Lukas Saari and Oscar Boldt-Christmas, who were working in McKinsey\u2019s healthcare team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe began by calling every doctor, psychologist, nurse, and physiotherapist we knew to understand their challenges and how we could assist,\u201d Oliver \u00c5strand explains.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>An AI medical assistant that relieves the burden<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Administrative documentation was consistently cited as the biggest time\u2011stealer. Oliver adds,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is massive. To put it into perspective, three percent of global GDP is spent on healthcare administration. Clinicians spend up to half their time on admin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This also goes beyond just documentation, as clinicians also spend time on scheduling, coding, referrals, and much more. Additionally, there is also the clinical dimension where clinicians can benefit from support to provide higher quality care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI in the LLM era has the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery and workflows. In total, over 1000 care organizations now use Tandem every day. This includes large care providers such as Capio Ramsay Sant\u00e9 in Sweden, and an ongoing rollout to 200,000+ clinicians in the UK\u2019s National Health Service through a partnership with Accurx.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doctors who use it are thrilled. We see how our assistant enhances the lives of healthcare professionals. One doctor told me, \u2018My life is divided into before and after Tandem.\u2019 Another said, \u2018Now I have time to eat dinner with my kids.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The AI medical assistant takes notes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The assistant \u2018attends\u2019 the entire patient consultation. It acts like a secretary, listening to the meeting and transcribing the conversation in real time. Notes are generated using the clinic\u2019s pre-defined templates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very easy to use, and during the onboarding process, we customize the assistant for each healthcare provider,\u201d says Oliver \u00c5strand.<\/p>\n<p>He stresses that it\u2019s not an autonomous system. Before anything is entered into a medical record, the responsible practitioner must review and approve it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AI assistant doesn\u2019t replace the clinician\u2019s role; it enhances it. Our tool allows staff to be more present and communicative with the patient while saving time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1061957\" src=\"https:\/\/pulse.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Tandem_6-1820x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1820\" height=\"1024\" data-contrast=\"\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Tandem_6-1820x1024.jpg 1820w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Tandem_6-300x169.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Tandem_6-768x432.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Tandem_6-1536x864.jpg 1536w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Tandem_6-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1820px) 100vw, 1820px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Major time savings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Clinicians using Tandem Health report saving up to two hours per day, with half of Tandem users stating they save more than 60% of their administrative time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose two hours make a huge difference in well\u2011being and reduced stress for the staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simple integration with existing electronic health records and note templates, along with intuitive design, are key success factors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see that even older, less tech\u2011savvy individuals quickly learn and benefit from the assistant. We also make a point of continuously gathering feedback from healthcare professionals to improve the tool further.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Focus on safety<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Patient safety is paramount. Former surgeon and regulatory expert Dr. Yan Peng Zhao is Tandem\u2019s Medical Device Regulation (MDR) Compliance Lead, working to strengthen data handling and legal compliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe regulations exist to ensure safe products. It\u2019s about minimizing risk so that what we build is truly safe to use in healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tandem is currently undergoing certification processes for future medical modules that they are developing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re already building with the same processes as if we were fully certified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To guard against potential AI errors, built\u2011in safeguards ensure practitioners verify notes before submitting them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have risk control measures across the entire interface. For example, if someone tries to approve a note too quickly, they get a warning that they must review the text first. We don\u2019t store any audio data. The audio is deleted immediately after the assistant has transcribed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>From administration to decision support<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tandem\u2019s vision extends beyond documentation; it\u2019s building an AI-native clinic operating system to also support clinical coding, clinical decision support and care coordination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ambition is to give more people access to the right care at the right time.
