Microsoft has been working\u00a0closely with\u00a0Science Foundation Ireland\u00a0over the last few years on\u00a0a number\u00a0of\u00a0targeted research\u00a0projects.\u00a0SFI\u00a0have now launched\u00a0Centres\u00a0for Research Training\u00a0(CRT)\u00a0to build on research excellence and provide cohorts of academically outstanding future research leaders with the skills and knowledge required to address the future challenges of an ever-changing work environment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Microsoft\u00a0<\/span>Ireland\u00a0<\/span>is proud to\u00a0<\/span>sponsor and<\/span>\u00a0mentor\u00a0<\/span>PhD Students in\u00a0<\/span>a number of these<\/span>\u00a0SFI Centres of Research Training (CRT)<\/span>\u00a0in the areas of\u00a0<\/span>Data Science, Machine Learning and Digitally Enhanced Reality<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Within each of the three CRT\u2019s we are sponsoring, a Microsoft Engineering Team\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0<\/span>partner<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0with the CRT itself and the individual PhD Students. Each PhD St<\/span>udent is working on an area of research that is aligned to development and research work our engineering\u00a0<\/span>teams\u00a0<\/span>are leading\u00a0<\/span>out of<\/span>\u00a0Dublin<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our ultimate goal is to enable research that can be leveraged within the company over the coming years<\/span>. W<\/span>e also leverage the sponsorship to me<\/span>ntor future research leaders that\u00a0<\/span>will hopefully\u00a0<\/span>see a career path with<\/span>\u00a0Microsoft after their PhD is completed.<\/span>\u00a0During the research period each of the PhD Students we have will also have the\u00a0<\/span>opportunity<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>int<\/span>ern<\/span>\u00a0with us as a guest researcher.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From a Microsoft sponsorship perspective, Microsoft employees can attend some of the lectures given to the PhD Students<\/span>. There is also the opportunity for\u00a0<\/span>Microsoft<\/span>\u00a0employees to attend and\u00a0<\/span>present on the work we do<\/span>\u00a0at their symposiums and finally there is an opportunity for a limited number of Microsoft employees to do a part time PhD with the relevant CRT.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Below are some more details on the projects we are sponsoring in each CRT.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CRT for Machine Learning<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span><\/i>n<\/span><\/i>\u00a0addition to their PhD research,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>the CRT for Machine Learning\u00a0<\/span><\/i>facilitate<\/span><\/i>s<\/span><\/i>\u00a0graduates to develop\u00a0<\/span><\/i>their\u00a0<\/span><\/i>skills and ensure\u00a0<\/span><\/i>an understanding of\u00a0<\/span><\/i>how\u00a0<\/span><\/i>these skills can benefit industry by solving business problems<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>I<\/span><\/i>ndustry<\/span><\/i>-ready graduates\u00a0<\/span><\/i>are encouraged to<\/span><\/i>\u00a0bring ethical and critical-thinking perspectives to their work<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CRT for Data Science<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The CRT for Data Science\u00a0<\/span>places<\/span><\/i>\u00a0Ireland at the nexus of this dynamic and competitive field and will facilitate the attraction of data-centric indigenous and international enterprise to Ireland. The graduates of this Centre will be uniquely adaptable to the rapidly-evolving needs of Ireland\u2019s data science industry and will become global leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and employers<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Microsoft Ireland is<\/span>\u00a0currently sponsoring two PhD Researchers wh<\/span>o<\/span>\u00a0have started their Internship with the Dublin\u00a0<\/span>E+D CSE\u00a0<\/span>Team focused on two areas of research \u2013 Diversity & Inclusion<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>focused on\u00a0<\/span>Accessibility in Int<\/span>ern<\/span>a<\/span>tional<\/span>\u00a0Markets<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0Social Listening\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 and\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>uild<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0a modern social media pipeline.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CRT for Digitally Enhanced Reality<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaders of the future will need to work across disciplinary boundaries and\u00a0<\/span><\/i>the\u00a0<\/span><\/i>SFI Centre for Research Training in Digitally Enhanced Reality (D-REAL) will contribute by developing digital skills for the next generation of human-centric media technology<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this CRT<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Microsoft\u00a0<\/span>Ireland\u00a0<\/span>is sponsoring<\/span>\u00a0research projects\u00a0<\/span>focused on\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>argeted<\/span>\u00a0Improvements for Technical Domain Machine Translation & Machine Translation system selection \/ Recommender system between MT and recycling candidates.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
