Businesses need to constantly look for new ways to adapt to the challenges presented to find their purpose and thrive. it is not the strongest that survives<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0but the species that survives is the one that is\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">best able t<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">o adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.<\/span><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stepping up for customers,\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">employees<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and society\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are many great examples of organisations stepping up\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during the pandemic.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">discussion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we heard how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Irish Distillers Limited\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">responded to the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">current\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">operating environment,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">adapting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to meet the needs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of its\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">brands<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">customers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the wider society.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since early-March, it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has been<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its Jameson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0distillery\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to produce<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0free<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hand sanitizer\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">healthcare worker<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s, as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was in short supply\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">across<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Ireland<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0skills\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that sit within<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0organisation to meet the wider needs\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of society<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is something<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the company\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Communications Director<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Rosemary Garth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spoke passionately about during the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0event<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As she put it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">N<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">ow is not the time for companies to disappear. Now is the time for brands to show up and make a difference.<\/span><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0well as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0digitally adapting its own business to ensure its employees can continue to work remotely throughout the crisis,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Irish Distillers has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also developed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">upskilling initiatives\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">support\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">workers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hospitality sector<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that have temporarily\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lost their jobs\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during the lockdown.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Microsoft\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lurlene Dugga<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emphasised the importance of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">finding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ways<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to upskill workers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, In Ireland, we have 40,000 people working in the developer space today, but we will need 165,000 to meet the future job opportunities created in areas like Artificial Intelligence.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0She also shared information about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/30\/microsoft-launches-initiative-to-help-25-million-people-worldwide-acquire-the-digital-skills-needed-in-a-covid-19-economy\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Microsoft\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">new global skills initiative aimed at bringing more digital skills to 25 million people worldwide by the end of the year<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Looking at Microsoft from an innovation perspective, over the last number of years we have really focused on our employee base<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">helping our employees to understand their capabilities for us to grow as a company.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">About three or four year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ago<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we looked at how we could start developing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0growth mindset<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0throughout the company<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When we look<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at our employees, we needed our sales teams\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more technical,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our research teams\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">become\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more field focused. For our customers and partners, we really need to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">provide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0skills they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">need\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">realise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the full value and potential\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Microsoft<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it comes to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">digital\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">transformation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you need\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people with the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0skills<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211; to adapt to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and implement this change.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For a business to innovate and reach\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0full potential<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0first<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0understand\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">capabilities of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">existing employees<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bring them on that journey in terms of their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">development<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In fact, research from Microsoft found that 74% of employees will happily retrain if they see it will keep them employed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Employee upskilling as well as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">attracting new talent will require\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">organisations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to radically rethink how they will operate and transform to meet both<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">challenging<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0current<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0climate as well as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">future\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recovery.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With disruption comes new opportunities.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite the current dis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ruption, we can\u2019t stand still.
